In St Louis, a city filled with plenty of popular, unique bars, it’s easy for some to get lost in the shuffle. And we certainly don’t blame you for picking a favorite spot (or a couple), and sticking to them. But these 10 all deserve your attention as well. For instance: You should visit Global Brew Tap House for its selection of beers (even beer shots); you should be stopping by Pagan Wine Bar for a truly unique vibe and tasty drinks; and you should be excited about the comedy specials, like open-mic nights (as well as the drinks), at The Heavy Anchor. Check out these buzz-worthy bars in the STL ASAP!
| Name | Location | Description |
| The Muddled Pig Gastropub | 2733 Sutton Blvd, Maplewood | The Muddled Pig is an ideal place for the local beef connoisseur with a refined cocktail palate. Take your pick from a bounteous variety — the Urban Chestnut, Schlafly, 4 Hands and other brews, many of them on tap. Or indulge in drinks such as The Michalada Snapper (a concoction of gin, bloody mary mix, creole and celery bitters, Serrano Pepper Ale and more) or, of course, The Muddled Pig (bacon-washed bourbon, vermouth, absinthe, grapefruit shrub, maple and rosemary). |
| Global Brew Tap House | 9578 Manchester Rd` | This bar has, you guessed it, an ample supply of brews from all over the globe. For a uniquely fun time, try their beer shots — two-brew combinations made to work in shot form. Or feel free to try a sample board of five-ounce pours, organized by beer type, seasonal releases, or any other way you want them. |
| Scarlett’s Wine Bar | 7036 Clayton Ave | A newer venture from the owner of the popular Sasha’s Wine Bars, Scarlett’s is a spot for great wine. The place is also home to some good pizza, courtesy of their 800-degree oven, as well crab cakes, baby kale salad and some excellent cheese plates. And if wine isn’t your thing, the beer selection here will keep you happy. |
| Pagan Wine Bar and Books | 239 N Euclid Ave | Step inside Pagan Wine Bar and Books and you’re transported to a different world, one lit in blue with unique decor. This is a place for a glass or two of wine and some sparkling conversation, as well as the occasional book-related event. It’s the hole in the wall turned hidden gem. |
| The Whiskey Ring | 2651 Cherokee St | The Whiskey Ring is the place to go for some of the best whiskey cocktails anywhere in St. Louis. Whether you want a lesser known but classic Kentucky Mule or Blood & Sand (Scotch, vermouth, orange juice and liqueur), or a timeless Manhattan or Old Fashioned, you’ve come to the right place. |
| Sanctuaria | 4198 Manchester Ave | Sanctuaria’s selection of tapas, which range from a charcuterie plate to shrimp and chorizo corn chowder, include many items that are essential. Along with a solid beer selection, the bar specializes in a wide variety of signature cocktails, including items like The Pear Necessities (vodka, pear liqueur, pear spiced honey-ginger shrub and bitters) and King of Jalisco (tequila, chocolate liqueur, orange, lemon and espresso beans). Happy hour deals all night Tuesday and late nights Friday and Saturday lighten the evening. |
| The Heavy Anchor | 5226 Gravois Ave | What really sets The Heavy Anchor apart from the rest are the events it hosts, including drink deals, trivia, live music and some of the best comedy in St. Louis. If you’re feeling really brave, or want to cheer or jeer a friend or total stranger, come here for its Comedy Shipwreck open-mic nights. |
| The Preston | 12 N. Kingshighway Blvd | The Central West End’s Chase Park Plaza has one of the city’s best pools. Its restaurant, The Preston, is a worthy destination in its own right: While not strictly a bar, it makes our top 10 because of a drinks list that you need to try, including an array of wines and cocktails like the Red Velvet Blazer (red pepper-infused tequila, Ancho Reyes liqueur, agave nectar and lime) and the High Altitude (Japanese whiskey, Génépy des Alpes liqueur and bitter lemon soda). |
| Propaganda | 2732 Cherokee St | Propaganda is unique in St. Louis, a bar in the image of communist Russia, complete with appropriate Soviet decor, themed drinks and a complimentary vodka shot to enjoy with your comrades each night at 10. After the shot, a mixed drink or two, like the Russian Tea (black tea vodka, ginger beer and lemon) or Drunky Tatanka (bison grass vodka, simple syrup and hard cider) are always a good call. Russian food is available as well. |
| Tick Tock Tavern | 3459 Magnolia Ave | An inviting bar in the STL, Tick Tock Tavern promises some solid drinks and conversation in a friendly setting. It’s cash only and while there’s no food available from the bar, you can order from neighboring Steve’s Hot Dogs. And, just like the great service at Tick Tock, Steve’s will deliver it to you. |
